Darlington Aug 6 – Charles Schoen, 84, died Thursday midnight at the home of his son, Walter, northeast of here, following an illness of 10 days with complications. He was born in Germany Jan 22, 1843 (note his tombstone says 44), and came to the US when he was 16 years old. He settled in Darlington and pursued the occupation of a bootmaker. He was an expert in that line and established a wide reputation. He was a republican, being a close friend of the late Congressman Charles B. Landis, who was a frequent visitor at his home.  Schoen had the reputation of having brought Landis out for congress.  Mr. Schoen is survived by only the one son at whose home he died. Funeral services were announced for Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the son’s home; burial in Greenlawn cemetery. The pallbearers: John McNamera, Robert Dunbar, Thomas Turnipseed, Arthur Paddock, Thomas Hulvey and Samuel Dykes. Rev. Nicely of Battle Ground was to have charge of the services. - kbz
